AMSC

The Austin Model Sailing Club (AMSC) is one of only 14 clubs in Texas sanctioned by the 200 club strong American Model Yachting Association (AMYA). The Club is also the only AMYA club in the central Texas area. The Club promotes, builds, sails and races model RC yachts. We sail yachts of two different classes: the very popular 31-inch, Victoria and the large 45-inch, Star-45. The Club races under the International Sailing Federation racing rules. These are the same rules used for the America's Cup and other "full scale" yachts. The yachts are controlled remotely by the skipper on shore using a radio transmitter (Tx) much like the ones used by RC flyer. The Tx sends commands to a receiver (Rx) on board the boat. The Rx passes those commands to small electric motors called servos, which winches in and out the sails and controls the rudder. This gives the skipper full control of the boat... well, that is, if the wind is blowing.

The AMSC was formed in summer of 1999 with just three members. Today the Club boasts a membership of 30+ with a fleet of over 40 yachts. The Club is made up of sailors; old, new, male and female, all ages, all backgrounds. The membership is from as far North as Temple, as far West as Lake Buchanan, and all the way down to South Austin. Some enjoy the building, some enjoy the racing, all share a love for sailing. Some bring "full scale" experience, others have never been on the water. With annual dues at $20 and complete entry-level yachts for as little as $200, this is a very affordable sport. Throughout the year the Club participates in regattas with other clubs from Houston, Dallas, Tyler, San Antonio and around the USA. It's hard to pass up an opportunity to "trade some paint". The Club meets regularly on the 2nd and 4th Sunday afternoon at various locations 1 PM - dusk. For the location of an upcoming sail check the Yahoo groups site or email Steve.

Visitors to our local sail site are always welcome and skippers are quick to offer time at the helm to anyone that wants to give it a try. So whether you are an old sailor or just a "want-a-be" sailor, RC yachting is a great way to sail. To learn more, visit us at the lake.
